ABOUT THE PROGRAM? HOW DOES IT WORK, AND WHO IS IT FOR?
1st Delaware Medical Venturers and Medical Rovers; often referred to as “MedVents”, is a vocational program of Scouts Canada for youth ages 14 to 25, with youth aging out of the program at 26 years old. Additionally we have a team of adult members who are referred to as Medical Advisors who held lead and guide the youth membership to achieve the group and personal goals. With 19 total MedVent groups and various other vocational groups (Fire/Police/Tech/SAR Vents) spanning across the country; we compliment the Scouts Canada world with professionalism and leadership across the board.
1st Delaware hosts weekly meetings at the Delaware Community Centre on the first three (and when applicable 5th) Wednesdays of the month from 7:00PM to 9:00PM. At these meetings, we offer professional development by engaging our youth in the group business such as event management, financial reports, and various presentations) as well as we do a whole host of medical training spanning from Standard First Aid practises to the Emergency Medical Responder scope with both practical and theoretical knowledge, under the Canadian Red Cross. |
HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM TRADITIONAL SCOUTING PROGRAMS?
MedVents is similar to traditional scouting by the very nature of the word; Scouting. Scouting is something that never varies across the organization as it teaches young individuals the importance of volunteerism, community service, and fostering a sense of community and personal responsibility. MedVents differs from traditional scouting in the specialized focus of our program. Traditional scouting offers programs that help develop skills such as Scoutcraft, camping, and aquatic skills such as canoeing, while MedVents specifically focuses on the development of first aid skills and how to apply them to real life scenarios. We then take those skills and apply them to various Scouting and Public events that we are requested to attend to provide first aid service. All of our members volunteer hundreds of hours a year by honing these skills and using them throughout the year at these various events.
